Vaccine Titres - What you need to know

As a veterinarian, I'm passionate about helping pet owners make informed decisions when it comes to their furry friends' health and wellbeing. One topic that is often overlooked, but incredibly important, is the role of titre testing in pet vaccination protocols.

In the province of Ontario, the only legally required vaccine for pets is the rabies vaccine. All other vaccines, such as those for distemper, parvovirus, leptospirosis, and others, are considered optional.

This is where titre testing becomes invaluable. Titre testing allows us to measure the level of antibodies in your pet's bloodstream, which indicates their level of immunity to specific diseases. By understanding your pet's titre levels, we can determine whether they have sufficient protection without the need for additional vaccinations.

Many pet owners are surprised to learn that not all pets are able to mount a proper immunological response to vaccines. These "non-responders" may receive the same vaccine as their counterparts, but their bodies simply don't produce the necessary antibodies to provide protection. Titre testing is the only way to identify these non-responders so that you can work with your veterinarian to figure out the best way to keep your pet safe, as vaccines will not mount an appropriate response for them.

Furthermore, it is extremely important to remember that only healthy animals should be vaccinated. Vaccinating a pet with an underlying health condition can put additional stress on their immune system and potentially exacerbate existing issues. Titre testing allows us to assess your pet's current health status and determine the best course of action, whether that's proceeding with vaccination or focusing on addressing any underlying concerns first.

One of the key benefits of titre testing is that it can help you avoid over-vaccinating your pet. While regular vaccination schedules are designed with the general population in mind, every pet is unique. Titre testing enables you to tailor your pet's vaccination protocol to their individual needs, ensuring they receive the protection they require without subjecting them to unnecessary immune system stimulation.

This is particularly important as we learn more about the potential long-term effects of repeated vaccinations. Chronic inflammation and immune system activation have been linked to a variety of health issues in pets, from autoimmune disorders to cancer. By relying on titre testing, we can minimize the number of vaccines your pet receives, reducing the risk of these adverse outcomes.

It's worth noting that titre testing is not a one-time event. As your pet's immune system and health status can change over time, it's recommended to perform titre testing on a regular basis, typically every one to three years, depending on your pet's individual needs. This allows us to closely monitor their protection and make adjustments to their vaccination schedule as necessary.

In conclusion, titre testing is a valuable tool that every pet owner should consider. By understanding your pet's unique immune response, we can ensure they receive the protection they need while avoiding the potential risks associated with over-vaccination. If you have any concerns about your pet's vaccination protocol or would like to discuss the benefits of titre testing, I encourage you to schedule a consultation with me. Together, we can work to keep your furry friend happy, healthy, and protected.

Our next titre clinic will be held at ADR Whitby on July 26th. Reach out if you are interested in participating, spaces are limited!!
