Many pet parents made the switch away from grain-free dog food after 2018, when the FDA opened an investigation into a possible link between grain-free diets and a serious heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy, or DCM. Others held onto their grain-free choice, unconvinced the evidence was strong enough to justify a change. What the Newer Research Actually Shows
A June 2026 research update from the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, synthesizing findings from more than thirty published studies conducted since the original 2018 alert, offers a considerably more precise picture. Diet-associated DCM has continued to show up in dogs eating both grain-free and grain-inclusive diets, but the common thread across cases has consistently been diets that are high in pulse ingredients, meaning peas, lentils, chickpeas, and other legumes, often alongside potatoes. Grain-free formulation on its own does not appear to be the operative variable. The research has also moved away from the original taurine theory. According to the Tufts update, diet-associated DCM does not appear to be caused by a lack of grain in the recipe, and it does not appear to be caused by taurine deficiency either. Most affected dogs in recent case series have had normal taurine levels, which means something else is going on.
One study that adds real substance to this picture comes from Dr. Lisa Freeman’s research group at Tufts, published in the American Journal of Veterinary Research. The researchers measured a urine biomarker, di-docosahexaenoyl bis monoacylglycerol phosphate, which is used elsewhere in medicine as a marker of phospholipidosis, an abnormal buildup of fat compounds inside cells. They compared levels of this biomarker across dogs with DCM eating high-pulse diets, dogs with DCM eating low-pulse diets, and healthy dogs on both types of diets. Dogs with DCM on high-pulse diets had significantly higher levels of the biomarker than healthy dogs on low-pulse diets, and biomarker levels rose in step with how much of the diet was made up of pulse ingredients. This does not prove that pulses cause DCM on their own. The study was a cross-sectional comparison rather than a controlled trial, and one of the four comparison groups included only four dogs, which is a small number to draw firm conclusions from. What it does offer is a plausible biological mechanism, abnormal fat processing inside heart cells, that researchers can now investigate further, rather than a vague statistical association with no explanation behind it.
The Research Pointing the Other Direction
At the same time, newer research is complicating the picture in the other direction too. A seven month prospective study conducted by BSM Partners and the University of Missouri, published in Frontiers in Animal Science, followed sixty five dogs eating four different diet formulations, including two grain-free recipes containing pulses and potatoes and two grain-inclusive recipes without them. Researchers tracked cardiac biomarkers, echocardiograms, and endomyocardial biopsies throughout the study. According to the lead author, Dr. Stacey Leach, this is the longest prospective study to date evaluating diet and cardiac function in dogs, and it did not detect the development of cardiac dysfunction in any of the diet groups over the seven month period.
Separately, BSM Partners has also reported that population level DCM incidence in dogs has stayed roughly flat over the past decade, even as the grain-free category grew by an estimated 500 percent over that same period.
It is worth noting that BSM Partners is a pet food industry consultancy, which does not make its research invalid, the study itself was peer reviewed, but it is a reasonable detail to weigh alongside independently funded research. It is also worth noting that seven months is a relatively short window. Diet-associated DCM in real-world case reports has sometimes taken many months or years of consistent feeding to develop, and has in some cases improved after a diet change, which means a study of this length, while genuinely valuable, cannot fully rule out effects that take longer to appear.
So Is Grain-Free Dog Food Safe?
Taken together, the honest answer is that the evidence is still evolving, and neither of the two simple stories, grain-free causes heart disease or grain-free has now been cleared, is fully supported by what is currently known. What does appear to be emerging as the more specific factor is pulse content, particularly when pulse ingredients make up a large proportion of a diet fed as the sole long-term food, rather than grain-free status on its own. A grain-inclusive diet that happened to be very high in pulses could theoretically raise similar questions, though most commercial grain-inclusive diets are not formulated that way. This is genuinely an area of active research, and pet parents should feel comfortable holding some uncertainty here rather than expecting a single definitive answer in either direction.
What Pet Parents Can Actually Do With This Information
A few practical steps make sense based on where the evidence currently stands.
Read the ingredient list for pulse content, meaning peas, lentils, chickpeas, and beans, and note roughly how prominently they feature in the recipe, this is more useful right now than simply checking whether a food is labeled grain-free.
Rotate between protein sources and diet formulations over time, rather than feeding the exact same pulse heavy recipe exclusively for years, a reasonable and low cost precaution.
Give extra attention to breeds with a known genetic predisposition to DCM, including Doberman Pinschers, Great Danes, Boxers, and Cocker Spaniels, regardless of diet, and discuss periodic cardiac screening with a veterinarian for these breeds in particular.
Seek prompt veterinary evaluation for any dog showing reduced exercise tolerance, unusual tiredness, coughing, labored breathing, fainting, or a swollen abdomen, since diet-associated DCM has shown real potential for improvement when caught early.
